This is the Only Level 3

The inescapably brilliant team of designers at Armor Games, including jmtb02 and Tasselfoot, have come up with yet another game to confuse/delight/enrage/entertain you. This is the Only Level 3 continues in the fine tradition of jmtb02's simple achievement-oriented games starring that tiny li’l elephant dude. This time around, the game features only one level, but it’s a level that changes each time you “beat” it. Reach the exit, then start over at the left side of the screen, moving through the small stage as you figure out what’s different and how you can get to the goal. It’s a lot like a puzzle game in many respects, and it’ll keep you happily busy for a good coffee break or three!

Words & Physics

Free physics games are always guaranteed to please. Free word games, on the other hand, might not be your cup of stew. But what if you mashed them together? Words & Physics tries just that, with its unusual blend of typing and physics manipulation. By selecting bits of text with the mouse, you can then type to shove a block of text off the bottom of the screen. Use text to manipulate dynamic platforms by physically pushing them around, or just nudge things by typing a bunch of letters. You can even use a few movement commands to pick up and carry text around! It’s not so much a word game as it is a physics puzzle, but it’s short, unique, and a very neat experience. You should also give That Word Game a shot if you enjoy this sort of genre mash-up!

Christmas Mini Escape from Neutral review

When it comes to point and click room escape games, Japanese developer Neutral is top of the line. The team releases just a few escape games each year, but when one does come around, it looks great, plays great, and offers a fair amount of tough challenges. This time around, Christmas Mini Escape (a natural follow-up to Christmas Escape 3) is a banner game released to celebrate the holidays. Even though the screen size may be small, the game is quite lengthy and serves up plenty of holiday-related puzzles to get you ready for presents!

As with any room escape game, one premise is a given: you’re trapped somewhere, and you want to get out. In this case, you’re in a decorated room filled with Christmas cheer. Looking around, you’ll notice a Christmas tree, a stocking, a bed, some drawers, and a conspicuously locked door. In fact, there are quite a few conspicuously locked items, but only one key in sight. And that key is in a bottle behind iron bars inside the fireplace! You’ve got no choice but to rummage around, turning over every door and lifting every potted plant to find things you can use to get out.

As with all Neutral games, puzzles are almost never straightforward. You must pick up several items before you can even use one of them, and in order to use most of them, you’ll have to decipher a few clues. The best way to win? Click everywhere. Every corner, every item, just below every item, everywhere. If you ever get stuck there’s probably something you’re missing, so you’ll just have to go back and search the room again! But since everything looks so pristine, it’s all the more entertaining to do so.

Really, the only detractor to Christmas Mini Escape is the small screen size. It’s a banner game, after all. Even though it’s little, the gameplay is big, and this little point and click adventure will test your puzzle solving abilities as well as any other escape game out there!

Verge – Originally a downloadable game released way back in the dark ages of 2008, Verge is a great platformer with a story based on a tale by H.P. Lovecraft. Travel through the world until you reach a barrier, then do something drastic to continue: die. Simply impale yourself on some spikes and you’ll be transported to the underworld where, hopefully, you’ll find an unobstructed path. Enemies wait for you down here, though, so book it back to the world of light as quickly as you can. Challenging, creative, and so much fun, you’ll want to visit the underworld in person! (Or, you know, not…)

William and Sly 2 – Another game that came out of nowhere, this exploration-centric platform game is a sequel to the 2009 release, and boy was it worth the wait! Gnomes have blocked up most of Sly’s caverns, but fortunately their spells aren’t too tough to break. Head out searching for treasures, nudging your little fox nose against every corner to locate hidden rooms. The game features a massive world to explore, and non-linear gameplay that allows you to venture out in any direction you please. Such a wonderful game, and it’s absolutely gorgeous to boot!

Dismantlement: Lunch Box 2 – We’ve spoken about the Dismantlement series before, and just a few nights ago, a surprise release appeared from the point and click author gam.egg. This time, you’re dismantling another lunch box, but the contents of this culinary treat are more than meets the eye.

New logic puzzle: Color Link-a-Pix Light Vol 1

Conceptis has a bit of a reputation for creating phenomenal free browser games that expertly transcribe pen and paper games to the Flash realm. Some of their best examples include Mix Sudoku Light, B&W Pic-a-Pix Light (picross), and Nurikabe Light. In early 2011, the team released a link-a-pix game that played just as smooth as if you had a piece of paper in front of you. Now, with the addition of Color Link-a-Pix Light, you get a rainbow of colors to go along with your free logic puzzle solving!

Link-a-Pix works using numbers placed throughout a grid. Each number tells you how many blocks should be filled, including that square, connected to an identical number. So, for example, if you see two number 4s near each other, they should be connected by shading no more or no fewer than four blocks. Things get complicated when you’re working with bigger numbers and multiple colors, but the same basic principles of logic hold sound, creating a supremely challenging (and beautiful, once you get it solved!) puzzle experience. You can’t get much better than Conceptis when it comes to free online logic puzzles, and their latest release is easy to play but offers some expert-level challenges!

Where is 2012? review

When the calendar year draws to an end, free Flash game fans have something special to look forward to: a new game from Mateusz Skutnik, artist and designer who leads Pastel Games, the studio that brought us masterpieces such as the Submachine series, Daymare Town, and Sneak Thief 4. This year, Where is 2011? takes us on a special trip to help Santa locate the new year, one leftover Christmas present at a time!

Let’s start out by stating something obvious. Where is 2012? is a gorgeous game. The artwork, as Skutnik is known for doing, is entirely hand-drawn, and there’s so much attention to detail, it’s as if you’re playing an intricate watercolor painting. The game plays out like a cross between a platformer and a point and click room escape game, putting you in Santa’s shoes as you venture around the small snowy area searching for more presents to collect. Doors can be unlocked by locating various switches, all of which aren’t so easy to spot, and a fair share of ladders, windows, fireplaces and chimneys also play key roles in giving you more screens to investigate.

Where is 2012? is a bit of a departure from the “Where is…” line of games. Previous adventures were more like Skutnik’s 10 Gnomes releases, featuring stark visuals and hidden object-style gameplay. Now, with a new look and more intricate controls, the new year-end release outdoes its predecessors in every way. It’s a wonderful coffee break-style game that will enchant and entertain you, all for the low price of free!

Point and click puzzle games of NekoGames

The best kind of free game is the kind you can instantly understand but take hours to master. Sometimes they have few or no instructions, allowing you the pleasure of discovering how they work before you get to mastering it. And naturally, a good-looking free game is better than an ugly one, just like how ice cream is better with sprinkles! Yoshio Ishii of NekoGames (creator of the Hoshi Saga series) has been around the free browser game scene for a very long time, and lately he’s been set on adding to a series of simple, stark-looking, but extraordinarily playable games that will take a minute or two to learn but hours to fully master. Get ready for some short but niiiice free Flash games!

TOUKA – The newer NekoGames release is a bit different than the rest, as it focuses on quick reflexes and cursor action instead of puzzles. TOUKA takes place across 16 levels, each filled with darkened flowers that move around the screen. Simply slide the mouse over a flower to light it up. Light them all and you’ll go on to the next stage. You can wiggle the viewpoint around a bit by clicking, but otherwise it’s up to your ability to chase petals around the screen. See how straightforward that is? Now try actually doing it and see if you sing the same song!

KIKKA – Like flowers? Good! Because you’re about to spend the next 15 minutes assembling them one by one! Each level presents you with a mostly-empty screen and the center of a single flower. Your job is to figure out how to get the petals to where they belong. Maybe you just wiggle the mouse a bit? Maybe you have to click and hold for a few seconds? Maybe something else entirely? You never really know, and half the fun is figuring out what to do.

OUKA – See that flower? Click it and you can move on. Seriously, just go ahead. What’s stopping you? Oh, they don’t want to be clicked? Well, it’s time for you to figure out how to make that happen! Don’t worry, if you’re stuck, a hint button is there, just like the rest of the Yoshio Ishii games. But, you know, only wimps use hints…
